Welcome to our Home Learning page! We are excited to introduce a simple and engaging structure designed to reinforce the key skills your children are learning in class, especially in Literacy and Numeracy. 

We believe that short, regular practice at home makes a huge difference, so we have kept the workload focused and manageable for both children and families.

📚 Our Weekly Home Learning Structure in KS1

Each week, the children will have three main activities to complete. They will also come home with two reading books. One matched to their reading level and another from our school library to read for pleasure.

1. Weekly Spellings (Phonics & Tricky Words)

  • When: Lists are sent home every Friday.
  • The Task: Your child will receive a list of weekly spellings chosen directly from the sounds and words we have been teaching in our Phonics lessons that week. This ensures that their spelling practice directly supports and reinforces their reading skills.
  • Spelling Quiz: The children will be evaluated on these specific words the following Friday.

2. Mathematics Task 

  • When: Assigned weekly.
  • The Task: We will assign one focused math activity each week. This task will consolidate the specific concept we are currently learning in class (e.g., addition, subtraction, shape recognition, or number bonds).

3. Weekly Writing Task (Literacy)

  • When: A writing task sheet is provided at the start of each half-term.
  • The Task: The writing task sheet contains six fun writing tasks. Children need to choose and complete one task per week.
  • Tracking: Children can tick the box on their sheet when they have finished a task. This menu approach gives the children ownership and choice over what they write about, fostering a greater love for writing.

Logistics and Support

  • Hand-in Day: Please return home learning books every Wednesday so we can review them in class and prepare them for the following week.
  • Questions or Concerns: We truly appreciate your support in helping your child build these essential skills at home. If you have any questions about the tasks or if your child is finding a particular activity overly challenging, please speak to a member of staff. Home learning should never be a source of anxiety or conflict.

📚 Our Weekly Home Learning Structure in the EYFS

Our Phased Home Learning Structure

To ensure our youngest learners are not overwhelmed as they settle into school life, we roll out our home learning expectations in two main phases.

Phase 1: Starting in Autumn 1

Once the children are settled in and are familiar with the school and class routines.

  • Daily reading: We ask that you share a wordless book and read with your child every day, and sign their reading record.
  • Weekly Phonics and oral blending: Children will need to practice their new sounds and oral blending using the provided phonics sheet.
  • Daily fine motor (pencil control) and name writing: children will need to practise their pencil control and writing their name.

Phase 1: Starting in Autumn 2

Beginning in the second half of the Autumn term (e.g., the week starting 14.11.26 ), children will have four main activities to focus on each week:

  • Daily Reading: We ask that you share a book and read with your child every day, and sign their reading record.
  • Weekly Phonics & Spellings: Children will need to practice their new sounds (phonemes), read and write words that use them, and look closely at their "tricky words" using the provided phonics sheet.
  • Weekly Oracy Task: Children will be given a weekly communication task to discuss with their families. For example, looking outside to draw a picture of the Autumn signs they see, and asking a grown-up to write down what they see and how they feel about it.
  • Mathematics Task: we will assign one focused, practical math activity each week to consolidate concepts learned in class. For example, children might be asked to recognise and order numerals to 5.

Phase 2: Starting in Spring 2

In the second half of the Spring term, once the children are highly confident with their phonics and reading routines, we will introduce a brief writing task.

  • Writing Task: We will assign one focused, writing activity each week to consolidate concepts learned in class. For example, children might be asked to write a sentence to describe a character or to describe what they can see in the picture.

Home learning should be a fun bonding experience and never a source of anxiety or conflict.
